The Cross Trail....

11 June 2013

Sitka has an extensive trail system that is amazing.  Its definitely one of our favorite things about this town.  One of the most accessible and well maintained trails is the "Sitka Cross Trail".  It runs the length of town which is about 4 miles one way winds through new growth and old growth forest, past a waterfall and is frequented by both humans and bears alike.

We love taking walks on the trail whenever possible.  The other night was a gorgeous evening for using the trail system.  This is a map illustrating the trail.

Below are just a few pictures of the beautiful things we see while on the trail...
This is Devils Club.  The Tlingit and Haida tribes have used this for generations for is medicinal purposes.  Its is a highly prized botanical in this region and grows abundantly.

Beautiful grove of Alders

Wild flowers are in full bloom and these Lupines were gorgeous in the sunlight.

Berries are not ready yet but as you can see they flowers are past their peak and the various berries are getting ready.  We will likely be picking them by August.

My girl...She generally does not enjoy hiking but on this night she did very well and I think enjoyed herself.  Living in a very small, remote town with very few options for entertainment definitely makes a person broaden their horizons and do things that you wouldn't necessarily like.  Taylor is definitely learning that is a fact.
