One year later....

So we arrived in Sitka on June 19, 2012. We have officially lived here 1 year.  That means we are 1/3 of the way through this billet.  This time next year we will be preparing to see another shopping list and figure out what our next move will be.

 I can't believe another year of our lives have gone by.  I honestly believe that when you live your life year by year and billet by billet your timeframe for life is very different.  We think and ponder events and memories by what unit we were stationed at, what city we lived in and which house was our home.

In 13 years, Trav and I have made a home in 6 different towns, at 6 different units, in 6 different houses.

Sitka has been a good billet so far.  Do get me wrong, living life here has its challenges too, but overall its been really good.

Challenges we face....

Short, dark winter days
Perpetual rain or snow 8-9 months out of the year
No stores....really there are no stores
14 miles of paved road
Wanting or needing something and not being able to go get it
Constant internet shopping for things like toliet paper
The cost to leave this island
Being so very far away from everyone and know no one will be coming to visit
The schools are HORRIBLE!!!

In any event, we are making the best of our time here.  The good days are amazing and the bad days are just another day.  We plan to make the most of this opportunity to live in the wilds of Alaska and soak up its greatness.  We will use its flaws as a reminder of what we don't want out of our forever home, wherever that may be.
