Resolution Update...

02 February 2011

So yesterday was Feb. 1st which means that Travis and I are one month into our so called "New Years Resolution". Remember this post.

I feel really good about things. We have changed our eating habits to what is called Clean Eating. Basically, we have tried to go back to eating the things that our bodies were designed to consume. It really hasn't been as difficult as I thought. There are things that we miss, namely red meat but we are really managing nicely. Travis has been amazing about the whole thing and has told me numerous times how good he feels and how much he is enjoying the food. Some days I do feel like all I do is prepare food. We are eating 5-6 times a day so it does take some planning but it is going well. The kids I don't think have really even noticed to much the changes I have made. There have been a few recipes I have had them eat where namely Travis looked at me and gagged. I have just tucked those recipes away or plan to try and find a way to make them a little more desirable.

We are planning to head to the Winter Farmers Market this Saturday to see what they have. I am on the hunt for red meat and I have been told there is a gentlemen there that is selling all natural beef and pork from his western Massachussettes farm.. I hope so because if he is I will be buying steaks and pork chops from him. Making the decision to not consume any meat that is not all natural has been an adjustment especially for Travis. That man loves his red meat but thankfully he understand the importance of it. Some day in a perfect world Travis and I would love to live sustainably off meat that he either hunts or that we can find locally. I still dream of buying my family a cow to butcher.

Also the second part of our resolution was to "Live Simply". This one is actually hard. Its about not buying what you don't need and perhaps only want and about knowing what you are buying and the journey it had to make to get to you. Recently we have saturated ourselves with documentaries on sustainability and accountability. Some of our favorites that I would highly recommend everyone see are:

GasLand
The Eleventh Hour
Food Inc.
No Impact Man
180* South

All of these are great flixs that are made to inform the masses about how destructive we really our and what steps need to be taken to make change.

I feel really passionate about this! I feel sad that society has such a sense of entitlement to everything and doesn't need to feel accountable for anything. Then again, its been this way for a long time. People want, want, want and they want it instantly or the quickest, cheapest way possible.

So, Travis and I have recognized that we can do subtle things to lessen our contribution to this way of thinking. Two days ago I realized I needed some new socks. I went to the store and was pleased to find socks made in Vermont. This was exciting...Vermont is only up the road from us. Rather then buy the cheap pair made in China I went for the $12.00 pair that was made in the USA/Vermont. That was a choice and a good one in my opinion.

We will continue to try and tweek our lives to do our best and truly think about things before we act on impulse. It really is that simple.
