Winter Walks

05 February 2010

The NorthEast as of late has been dealing with quite a cold spell. Last weekend we ventured out for a walk at Nickerson State Park. It was a beautiful sunny day and we are always game for a good hike. The -5 degrees temps. gave our faces a bit of a bite but it felt so good to be outside among the trees listening to the sounds of nature. Not much is out this time of year but you can find a few birds still singing their songs. To us as strange as it sounds, we enjoy the nothingness. Several times along our hike we stopped, said a low "SHHHHHH" to the kids and then relished in the moment. Trav and I look to one another say nothing, hear nothing and yet totally understand one another. Its that silence that brings us the smiles. We love our time with the kids enjoying nature, educating them, just helping them understand the importance and value of staying active and respecting our surroundings. The lesson this day was to just enjoy one another, enjoy the outdoors and look past the bitter cold temps.

Funny enough the following day we once again got snow. It was nothing more then a few inches but as always the snow turns the Cape beautiful. I was just commenting to Trav how during the summer Cape Cod is a bustling tourist trap full of green trees and busy beaches...but I would still consider it somewhat beautiful The fall brings golden leaves and crisp mornings...still beautiful. Winter on the Cape is gray and brown. The trees have lost their leaves and are sleeping the grass is brown the skies are gray most days. Its definitely not the most beautiful winter escape ever. I think this time of year is when we miss those deciduous trees the most. Once that snowfall comes it finally turns beautiful. Snow can make anything look peaceful and stunning. So on the way to pick up Taylor from school the other morning I stopped to snap a few pictures of a local pond, frozen over and covered in snow. It was cold and gray...but beautiful!!
